Kindy News!

The kindy children love talking about History and Tonya Wood has incorporated History into her news telling sessions.

Historical Knowledge and Understanding:
How the stories of families and the past can be communicated, for example through photographs, artefacts, books, oral histories, digital media, and museums (ACHHK004)
Historical Skills:
Chronology, terms and concepts
· Distinguish between the past, present and future (ACHHS016)
Analysis and use of sources
· Identify and compare features of objects from the past and present (ACHHS019)
Explanation and communication
· Use a range of communication forms (oral, graphic, written, role play) and digital technologies (ACHHS022)

Lesson Sequence:
Prior to Lesson:
1. A ‘Newsbox’ has been sent home with 3 students including instructions regarding the collection of an item from home that is significant to the child’s family history.
2. Teacher should look in the ‘Newsbox’ when the child brings it in and locate the modern item or a picture of the item for comparison later.

Lesson
1. Children sit in a circle in a small group of 6 – 8 children. The child with the ‘Newsbox’ is to show and discuss the item they have brought along. The child is encouraged to use the news telling framework of ‘Who, What, Where and When’.
2. Children within the audience are encouraged to ask questions related to the item or make comments as they relate it to their own experience.
3. The teacher should show the modern day equivalent of the item (a photograph will suffice) and ask for the children to identify and compare features of the items from the past and present.
4. The item is then placed in the ‘Kindy Museum’.
5.  This activity can be followed up with the group of children doing a painting, drawing or collage to show the items from the past and present.

6. Activity is repeated with another small group of children and another child sharing their ‘Newsbox’.

Here are some pictures of paintings completed after the Newsbox session.
"There's brown in the light, it was used for the train."

"The lantern and I painted the train. The lantern stopped the train"
"Mum use to turn it and get coffee. It was hard"
"A truck 'a' olden days truck"

To see how this all works in the kindy classroom, come along to the next "Hike through History: K-3" on the 5th of September. Places are limited, so make sure you visit the IPL website to register your place!

Happy History Teaching!

Hike Through History

Wow! Wow! Wow!

We had a fantastic morning with 3 very motivated teachers who hiked up the hill to Sawyers Valley to see K-3 students involved in History lessons!

Here is some of their feedback!

"Thank you for a great morning. I got lots of ideas that I can't wait to implement in my classroom."

"I learnt so much from this History Hike. It is by far the best and most effective form of PD that I've been exposed to for quite some time!"

"It was really great to see the process in action...Thanks for providing this great opportunity to see the lessons and for sharing your school, classrooms and students."

Thank you Meika and Jeanette (Quinns Beach Primary School) and Lynnette (Curtin Primary School) for you participation and enthusiasm today.

Our next History Hike is on Thursday the 5th of September! Please register via the IPL website.

If you are having any difficulties registering, please email me stephen.powell@education.wa.edu.au

History Reminders!

Welcome back one and all to a new term and hopefully you are starting to get into the swing of things, in particular History!

A couple of reminders:
  • We have our 3rd History CafĂ© next Wednesday (7/8/13) starting at 3:30. We will be looking at Integrating History and developing some learning plans. Very exciting! And there will be cake! It is not too late to register via the IPL website. If it closes, please just send me an email.
  • We are also offering our very first online professional learning via Centra (13/8/13) commencing at 3:30 pm. You can enjoy a History PD from the comfort of your home or school office. Just post me an email if you are interested. It will be a very basic introduction to Australian Curriculum: History. Hopefully all systems will work and I won’t get too muddled!
  • We have our first 'Hike Through History K-3' sold out for tomorrow! We have another one planned for the 5th of September - go to the IPL website to register as places are limited.
  • Our second History Cafe for the term will be on the 11th of September commencing at 3:30 pm. IPL website to register.
Researching tip!

I was talking with a teacher the other day and they hadn't heard that you can reduce the reading level for students when using a search engine. It may help reduce the number of pages in a search. To modify the reading level it is best to watch this youtube clip. I hope this can be of some help!

That is all for now.
We hope to see you soon!

Introduction to History via Centra

I am not sure if it the end of term stress or I am not thinking clearly, however...

I am taking a brave leap forward and have decided to trial using Centra to deliver some professional learning!

If you are interested in participating in the maiden session, please send me an email and I will enrol you.

Stephen.Powell@education.wa.edu.au

The professional learning will be an "Introduction to Australian Curriculum:History". Great for those who haven't attended any professional learning in Australian Curriculum: History. It will also be great for Centra novices like myself, just in case you haven't been on Centra before.
I have scheduled it for Tuesday the 13/8/13 at 3:30 PM and it will run for 90 minutes or less depending on technology and my facilitation. Remember, you will be the guinea  pigs!

Make sure that your school has enrolled in Centra and please be very patient with me as this will be my first attempt.

If the date happens to change due to unforeseen circumstances (such as commitments at my school), I will email you directly if you are enrolled.

Wish me luck!

History Blog Update

I have just made a change to the blog so that finding the planning tools will be easier. At the top of the page you will see a 'Home' tab and an 'Australian Curriculum History Planning Tools" tab. If you click the planning tools tab you will be taken directly to the new page with the links. Then you can choose the planning tool you wish to use.

Each time you check in to the blog,  please scan through the links on the right hand side to see if there are any new links. I have recently added the The Woodlands Hub (English TDS), Science@Greenmount (Science TDS), York DHS (History TDS) and today Johnno's Science (Science TDS). When new links are added, you will not get an email if you have registered to follow by email. You will only get an email if a new post is added.

To FOLLOW BY EMAIL,  you can submit your email address under the link list. This way you will receive an email to let you know of a new post.

History in Pre-Primary!

Recount of a Memory
The children listened to "Wilfred Gordon MacDonald Partridge" by Mem Fox. We discussed that their memories are their past. The children shared some of their memories and we talked about what a memory was. we discussed that they needed to be present for it to be one of their memories otherwise it was someone else's memory. For example, "I remember when I was born" is actually their parent's memory. Each child then individually recounted a memory and drew a picture to accompany their recount.
Timeline Activity
The children were involved in a number of activities that focused on when they were babies. This assessment piece of work required the children to draw themselves as a baby, now and an adult. They were asked to think about size, features, types of activities and then likes/interests at each particular stage. Some interesting perceptions of our adult world! Funny!
Time Tunnel
The children have been discussing things they like to do with their grandparents and have been reading books about grandparents. The children looked at books about homes, toys and buildings from the past and were engaged in a discussion about the past. They then crawled through the time tunnel to discover some objects from the past such as a record player and records, typewriter, old telephone, manual irons. They played with these objects and were given opportunities to pose questions and explore how they were used.

Photos of the 3 activities are below.
Thank you Carey Stewart for providing these wonderful samples.
A reminder that our second History Cafe will be on Tuesday the 11th of June. We will be looking at Evidence in all years. If you wish to attend please email me as the registrations have closed. stephen.powell@education.wa.edu.au

Have a great weekend!
